SOME Bible Reasons to Attend Church

INTRODUCTION

Why do you attend church? What is the main reason, the thrust behind why you wake up each Sunday morning, get ready and come to church?

We know that some people attend “church” (using the term loosely) simply because they want to be with their friends or family. Or, they just like to meet new people. Or maybe merely want to be seen. Some go to church because they want to feel good about themselves. They think God smiles when He sees them walk in the church house. Others go because they are forced into going. Husbands might go because their wives keep “nagging” them to go, or kids go because they are told to.

Still yet, there are some who go to “church” because they are entertained. This could be through contemporary music, drama choruses, physiological self help sermons, or the modern casual dress atmosphere.

But, why do YOU attend church? Why do you make the effort week after week to come to the place we call “the house of God?”

Below are listed some good biblical reasons you should attend church.

NOTE: Not all “churches” will meet the requirements found in scripture as to what a church should be. Some have preachers who do not “preach the word” (2 Tim. 4:1), or even believe the Bible! Some are social centers that focus on self-help psychology and entertainment. Others are teaching heresy (false doctrine). All churches are NOT the same. It is my conviction that the closest church to a biblical New Testament church is an independent Baptist church that stands for the sole authority of the King James Bible. That is the kind of church you need to be a member of!

Why attend Church?

Because you can learn the scriptures at church.

Acts 11:26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

As a Christian you are commanded to be a student of the scriptures (2 Tim. 2:15). How better to be a student than to sit in the classroom of good, solid Bible teaching! Pastors are to be “apt to teach” (1 Tim. 3:2). But they need students!

While it is true that the Holy Spirit of God is the true Bible teacher (1 John 2:27), scriptural understanding is somewhat determined upon some help from those who are familiar with the word. Note the story of the Ethiopian and Philip:

Acts 8:30-31

30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?

31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.

Church has been established so Christians can be trained and taught the Bible. We have gotten away from solid Bible teaching and it has cost us. America is presently filled with Christians that are Bible illiterates. Many Christians are even capable enough to lead a lost soul to Jesus Christ. Some have never even read the Bible through once!

Show up for Sunday school. If your pastor teaches a special class be there! Learn all you can while you can. God has given some tools to equip the saints, and Christians are simply missing them, by missing church!

You need Bible preaching.

Acts 15:35 Paul also and Barnabas continued in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.

Acts 20:9 And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead.

1 Thess 2:13 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

Whether you have been saved fifty years or two months, YOU need to be preached at! We are sinful creatures and need the “hell,” and the “devil” preached out of us on a weekly basis.

Bible Preaching (not this modern milk sop junk) accomplishes several things. It exposes you to what God says, what is right and what is wrong. It also brings conviction from the Holy Spirit of God, as to what God wants you to do and how you are live your Christian life.

Bible preaching goes beyond the intellect (the realm of teaching), and into the crevices of the heart and will. God uses and blesses solid Bible preaching that does not compromise the word of God. Note the following verses:

1 Cor 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

1 Cor 1:21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

1 Cor 2:4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:

Titus 1:3 But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;

You need good Christian fellowship.

Heb 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

You might be able to listen to a good sermon online, or read a good book that teaches the Bible. But you will not be able to have close personable fellowship with other believers of like mind if you don’t go to church.

The disciple all assembled together. Paul encouraged the believers that were gathered together (Acts. 20:8). And we need that camaraderie, not to mention the prayers of fellow saints.

Why some will not go to Church?

1. They don’t want to hear Bible preaching.

They don’t want some preacher telling them how bad they are. They reject the fact that the Bible is right even when it condemns them and they way they live.

2. They can’t find a good church.

This argument has some validity. But a person truly seeking a solid Bible preaching church should do whatever is necessary to find one. Commuting long distances, or moving should not be out of the priority list for a consecrated Christian who sincerely desires to go to a solid church.

Too often this excuse is used because the person has developed such a narrow mind. There are some who have no “grace” and split so many doctrinal hairs that they are theologically balding. If the church and pastor are independent Baptist and believe the King James Version, those are pretty good “scores.” Have a little grace, humble yourself and submit (oh no!!!) to the Pastor’s leadership (Hebrews 13:17).

3. Laziness.

Flat out laziness. Laziness physically and spiritually. They simply don’t have much desire to learn the Bible, hear preaching or sing about the Lord. They are typically very carnal (1 Cor. 3) and worldly minded. They might be saved, but they are spiritual zeros.

4. Old wounds.

Some folks have been hurt in church either by a pastor or fellow member. They are typically very sensitive people, and often use this as an excuse to quit ANY church. They are disobedient to the Lord while attempting to justify their self righteousness. Often they will “backslide” (an Old Testament term meaning to fall back into sinful ways) and live a carnal life.

5. Too many cares of this world.

Whether it be the second job, the night shift, the marital problems, the kids runny nose, there is just too much “going on” for them to get away to church. Even though they attend work and Wal-mart, going to church is just too much for their hectic lives.

They possess very little character, and fail to realize how much better their lives would be as Christians if they would attend regularly.

Conclusion

I could go on and on, but I think you get the point. We all need church! We need to be there every time the doors are opened (if at all possible). We need to take our kids to church, participate in activities, give for its causes and pray for its leaders.
