Todays Study Text is: Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

I. The curse of sin.
A. Sin brought about a separation.
1. From the presence of God.
2. From the fellowship of God.
B. Sin brought about a penalty.
1. Emery Bancroft listed seven words that summarized this penalty.
a. Death.
(1). Physical death.
James 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
(2). Spiritual death.
Ephesians 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
b. Lost
(1). The loss of Heaven.
(2). The loss of relationship to God or any spiritual identity with God.
Isaiah 59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.
(3). The loss of righteousness or any spiritual direction.
Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
c. Condemnation.
(1). Signifying future judgment.
Romans 2:1-6 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things. But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things. And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God? Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; Who will render to every man according to his deeds:
(2). Signifying future curse or sentence.
Matthew 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Revelation 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
d. Guilt.
(1). To be declared guilty of the offense.
Romans 3:19-20 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
James 2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
(2). Also to feel and carry the emotion of guilt.
e. Perdition. (a state of punishment which goes on for ever, suffered by evil people after death)
(1). Signifies a total ruination of those who die in their sin.
1st Timothy 6:9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
2nd Peter 3:7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
(2). To suffer permanent waste.
f. Punishment.
(1). The just infliction of eternal torment in a literal fiery Hell.
Luke 16:24-25 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
(2). The just infliction of eternal separation from all light, joy, happiness, and good.
g. Eternal.
(1). An eternal sentence of punishment.
Matthew 25:46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.
(2). An everlasting state of existence without parole, probation or another chance.
(3). An eternal separation from God.
James 1:15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
James 5:20 Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.
Revelation 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
2. The penalty is upon all persons for all have sinned..
